"Juvenile Imperator" 2018, Novato CA. 14 x 17 inches
Once, on a night dive, I saw a juvenile angelfish just about an inch long. I will always remember how amazed I was when I learned that as an adult it looks completely different.

I once found some photos that my father took of various ceremonial masks from the Dyaks of Kalimantan in the island of Borneo in Indonesia. I took the mouth on one with the eyes of another and made my version of a Dyak mask. I find them strikingly intense and love the simple and basic red, black and white colors.
“Manta” 2001, Bali, Indonesia. Ink on Paper, 6 x 8 inches

This one took me a while, and it’s mostly a practice of detailed replication. I was taking many classes on art and history of Mesoamerica and the lid to the sarcophagus of king Pacal in Palenque was one of my favorite examples of Mayan art.
